Self Management in Care

Innovative Local Initiatives: Independent Housing and Care

As a result of changes in the distribution of healthcare budgets, institutional healthcare providers are no longer able to maintain their current level of care provision. To manage spending on healthcare, more responsibility is transferred to municipalities and civilians. This causes the institutional healthcare sector to contract, which has profound implications for healthcare accomodation. Because of vacancies and depreciation of the current building stock, healthcare institutions are facing financial problems. There is a lack of alternatives for the increasing societal desire for small scale solutions and customization. Policies change faster than institutional healthcare can manage. At the same time, viable alternatives for organizing and housing the continuing demand for healthcare are lacking. Existing initiatives for self-organisation are mostly isolated and do not receive enough support from policy makers and institutions.
