Practical info

Here you can find information on (public) transport. To make your stay in Groningen as pleasant as possible, we have also added a small list of recommendations for restaurants and hotels.

UMCG is easy to reach by both public transport or by car and has ample parking facilities on and outside its site. The location is situated minutes from Groningen's city centre and is close to the train station.

By plane
Flying to the Netherlands usually means flying to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport where you can take a direct train to Groningen. Direct flights to Groningen Airport Eelde are rare, although there is a daily connection from London Southend Airport to Groningen Airport Eelde operated by FlyBe. By train
A direct train leaves from Schiphol Airport to Groningen Central Station every hour. Intercity trains leave 3 minutes past the hour from platform 1-2. Final destination is Groningen. You can also take the intercity to Zwolle. This train leaves every hour at 33 past the hour from platform 1-2. In Zwolle you change and take the train to Groningen. The journey wil take you about 2 hours and 10 minutes. Upon arrival at the station take a bus or taxi to UMCG. For further information consult the NS.nl (Dutch Railway) or 9292 travel planner. 


Where do I buy my train ticket?
You can travel on NS (the Dutch Railways) with either a single-use chipcard or an OV-chipkaart. Both are available from the yellow ticket machines with the blue overhead sign reading ‘traintickets’. OV-chipkaart cardholders can also use the ticket machines with the yellow overhead sign. The ticket machines are located near the platforms at Schiphol Plaza. Tickets (for domestic and international travel) are also available from the Ticket- and Service desks, which are situated close to the red/white-checked cube at Schiphol Plaza. Staff at the desk will also be able to provide you with train departure information and general information on travelling by train in Holland. You travel by checking in and out at the train station before and after your journey. One way tickets to Groningen will cost you € 25,70 full fare (2nd class) or € 43.70 (1ste class). For more information please check the NS website: www.ns.nl/en.


By car
The UMCG is immediately signposted on road signs on the ring road drivers end up on after approaching Groningen from the A28 motorway (direction Assen) or the A7 (direction Drachten). After following the road signs to UMCG you will end up at the parking garage below the main entrance.


Parking
Parking garage Boterdiep is walking distance from the UMCG. Please take into account:

  • The address for navigation systems: Boterdiep 85, 9712 LL, Groningen
  • The parking facilities are open daily from 7 AM to 11 PM. 
  • The fee for parking is € 10.00 per 24 hours.
  • Maximum height clearance: 2,00 meters.
